Joe Biden and Marcos met at South china sea on Thursday, discussing tensions in the South China Sea. Two leaders met at the UN General Assembly. In June, Marcos, son of Ferdinand Marcos, took power.

During their talks, Biden mentioned China’s influence in the South China Sea, COVID-19, and renewable energy as topics. Marcos was thanked for opposing Russia’s war in Ukraine.

According to Marcos, the United States plays a critical role in maintaining peace in our region, particularly with the Philippines.

In case the U.S. needs to defend Taiwan militarily against Chinese attack. The Philippines is a vital ally and strategic ally. Biden and Marcos also discussed the U.S.-Philippines relationship, including economic development, security, and human rights. The two leaders agreed to continue working together on issues of common concern, including countering terrorism and extremism. They also discussed issues related to the South China Sea dispute, which has been a source of tension in the region for some time now.

Because of the need to prepare for such a scenario, the U.S. is eager to facilitate greater access to bases in the Philippines.

Philippine ambassador to the U.S., a relative of Marcos, reportedly told Japanese newspaper Nikkei that Manila will use its military bases only “if it’s for our own security.”
