Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev agreed to enhance bilateral ties and enhance trade and energy cooperation. 

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev met with Prime Minister Shehbaz on the sidelines of the Sixth CICA Summit in Astana on October 12th, 2022.

Both leaders agreed to boost trade, investment, education, information technology, security, agriculture, and connectivity.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Aliyev was briefed about his government’s efforts to help flood-affected people in Pakistan recover and restore their livelihoods.

In the upcoming sowing season, the Prime Minister emphasized that standing crops had been damaged, which made it impossible to cultivate. Importing urea was crucial to averting this danger and revitalizing the agricultural sector.

Azerbaijan  support

He was assured that Azerbaijan would support him fully in this regard. A number of global and regional issues of common interest were also discussed at the meeting.

Sharif praised Azerbaijan’s steadfast position on Jammu and Kashmir and its role as a member of the OIC Contact Group. Pakistan’s support for Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh has been praised by Azerbaijan’s president Ilham Aliyev.

Both leaders committed to intensifying and deepening bilateral collaboration in a wide range of mutually beneficial areas. A number of ongoing initiatives to promote trade, investment, and connectivity were also discussed.

Cooperation between the two countries 

His government places a high priority on fostering close cooperation between the two countries in the field of energy.

Shehbaz has nominated the Minister of State for Petroleum to lead bilateral energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and Pakistan.

It was agreed that the two leaders would engage robustly in discussions about energy collaboration between their countries.

As part of advancing regional connectivity, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif proposed leadership-level consultations in Islamabad. After their last meeting at the sidelines of the SCO in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in September 2022, this was their second interaction, offering a productive opportunity to foster a multifaceted economic relationship between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.
