In the T20 World Cup on Sunday, India’s bench strength will cover for injured stars, Rohit Sharma said.

Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is out with back issues, so Mohammed Shami has been added to India’s 15-man squad.

Rohit insisted that despite the absence of key all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, the team remains ready to face any challenge.

It is a fact of life that injuries are a part of the sport. As a result, we have focused on developing bench strength,” Rohit told reporters in Melbourne.

“The main focus of our work is to try and create backups and make sure they have an opportunity to succeed. There have been enough matches played by the bowlers who have with us during the World Cup.”

Having won the Champions Trophy last year, India will play Pakistan in Melbourne on October 23.

Shami, 32, was a last-minute replacement after he missed the home series against Australia and South Africa due to Covid.

During the warm-up games against New Zealand and the hosts, the veteran quick will meet up with the squad.

Rohit Sharma conversation about Shami

In the few conversations that we’ve had with Shami, we’ve heard very good things, said Rohit. His recovery from Covid has been good, and he has bowled three or four times with full intensity. The situation with Shami is looking good at the moment.”

He will join fellow fast bowlers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, and Arshdeep Singh in the team.

‘Fully committed and fit’

Shaheen Shah Afridi has returned to action after recovering from a knee injury to boost Pakistan’s chances.

He said Shaheen was fit and ready, despite turning 28 on Saturday. Aaron Finch presented Azam with a cake on the dais.

Shaheen has come back fit and dedicated, and we are looking forward to the tournament,” said Azam.

Fast bowlers from Pakistan have always been one of the best in the world, and they are among the best in the world today. As a result of Shaheen’s return, we have seen a significant improvement in the strength of our fast bowling unit.

Having won a T20 tri-series in New Zealand, Pakistan are fresh from losing the title last year to eventual winners Australia.

“Our confidence will carry us into the World Cup,” added Babar, anticipating an intense match against India.
