It is urging the Supreme Court to prevent Imran Khan from leading a long march on Islamabad in the name of alleged jihad against the government by filing a contempt petition against him.

 

The Ministry of Interior filed the petition, requesting to begin contempt proceedings under Article 204 of the Constitution against Imran Khan for disobeying and ignoring the rulings of the supreme court rendered on May 25, 2022, in response to the petition brought by the Islamabad High Court Bar Association.

 

It appealed for the adoption of suitable decrees for the execution of the Supreme Court’s ruling of May 26 and the defense of the public’s basic rights, notably those of the the inhabitants of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, two twin cities.

 

In order to safeguard citizens’ fundamental rights to personal safety and freedom of movement, which are guaranteed by the Constitution, the ministry also requested.

Supreme Court issue detailed guidelines

The Supreme Court issue detailed guidelines for all future protests in the federal capital, including advance notification of the date, venue selection, guarantees.

That protests won’t disrupt daily life, and a commitment to make sure that protesters don’t damage any public or private property.

 

It said that Imran Khan had continued to make threats after the federal government changed its plan to overthrow the current administration by invading Islamabad with the aid of PTI members.

 

In this regard, Khan has called for a protracted march and sit-in at Islamabad’s D-Chowk; the specific date has not yet  declare. But according to Khan and other PTI officials’ remarks and media appearances, the long march appears to be approaching, the ministry claimed.

 

In its order from May 26, 2022, the apex court had noted with concern that assurances given by the top leadership of the PTI might have  disregarde by the workers and supporters in their attempt to travel to D-Chowk and had allegedly committed acts of arson and destroyed both public and private property. This is what the court recalled.

Federal administration

It asserted that Khan had furthermore claimed to have planned a scheme to ambush the federal administration with his lengthy march.

Further, it argue that Khan should be prosecute under Section 124-A of the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860, for inciting hate and contempt for the government.

Khan’s prior actions, in particular the events of May 25, 2022, warrant strong instructions from this court regarding his upcoming protest.

 These actions include Khan’s violations of the orders issued by the apex court, his encouragement of his supporters to destroy both public and private property, disruption of law and order, and interference with the lives of citizens across the nation.
