Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, died on Friday at the age of 72, his agent announced.

In two James Bond films, Goldeneye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999), he starred as a former KGB agent turned Russian mafia boss.

Belinda Wright called Robbie Coltrane “a unique talent”, in a statement after the death of her client and friend on Friday, October 14 .

Anthony Robert McMillan, who was born on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, near Glasgow, forged a career as an actor, comedian, and writer.

In 1987, he starred with Emma Thompson in the cult BAFTA-winning BBC miniseries Tutti Frutti.

As Eddie “Fitz” Fitzgerald, a hard-drinking criminal psychologist in the ITV series Cracker (1993-2006), he achieved fame and won more awards.

Comedy series

Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) and Hugh Laurie (House) portrayed Samuel Johnson in the TV comedy series Blackadder the Third.

He was “awed/terrorized/love struck all at once” when he first met Coltrane 40 years ago, according to frequent co-star Stephen Fry.

We made our first TV show, ‘Alfresco’, with such depth, power & talent that it caused helpless hiccups & honking. Dear old friend, I say farewell to you. Your loss  felt terribly, and you’ll be sorely miss,” he wrote in his letter.

Moreover, Coltrane starred in Neil Jordan’s 1987 crime drama Mona Lisa and the 1990 comedy Nuns on the Run alongside former Monty Python star Eric Idle.

Harry Potter books

Hagrid appears as Rubeus Hagrid in the film adaptations of JK Rowling’s best-selling Harry Potter novels.

During the last 20 years, Wright received a stream of fan letters every week from children and adults alike.

She added that, in addition to being an excellent actor, he was forensically intelligent and brilliantly witty.

So, it is impossible that I will ever know anyone even remotely like Robbie again, according to Rowling’s tweet.

He was an incredible talent, a true one-of-a-kind, and I was beyond fortunate to know him, work with him and laugh my head off with him.

In addition to his sister Annie Rae and children Spencer and Alice, he is survive by their mother Rhona Gemmell.

Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Scotland, was thanked for its care and diplomacy after Wright’s death but no cause of death was given.
