On Thursday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that former coach Matthew Hayden will return to the team management as a mentor for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Hayden will join the team for the Asia Cup in September and be available through to the end of their World Cup assignment.

PCB has once again put its trust in Hayden’s mentoring to produce exceptional results following a temporary but successful stint as the batting coach at last year’s T20 World Cup.

Hayden will be available to work with the team through to the end of their World Cup assignment next year in India.

In the league matches, his team defeated India, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia to reach the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

As part of the T20I series in which Bangladesh and hosts New Zealand also competed, Hayden will join the team in Brisbane on 15 October.

“I have been watching Pakistan’s performance in the ACC T20 Asia Cup, and their victory over India on Sunday was fantastic,” Hayden said at the event. From both batting and bowling perspectives, I believe this Pakistani side is capable of excelling in Australia.

There is no doubt that this team will light up the World Cup as it did in the UAE last year.”

“ I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience regarding all conditions in Australia with Pakistani players,” he added.

In the meantime, Chairman PCB Ramiz Raja welcomed the legendary batter’s return to Pakistan, saying that his credentials  recognized around the globe as a proven performer.

“The knowledge of Australian conditions he has will be invaluable for our outstanding cricketers during the World Cup and on future tours.

Why is Matthew Hayden coming to Pakistan?

Hayden, who has played 91 Tests and 79 ODIs for Australia, was appointed as the batting coach for the Pakistan T20I squad in May last year. Under his coaching, Pakistan’s batsmen scored heavily against New Zealand and England as they lifted their first-ever T20 World Cup trophy.

Matthew Hayden appointment comes after a successful stint as the batting coach for Pakistan during the World Cup. The Australian legend helped Pakistan win the trophy and gave them new-found confidence in their approach to T20 cricket.

Hayden will available until the end of the tournament, expected to run from September 30 through October 14.
