In the wake of another chaotic week in which many staff members left Twitter and policy reversals occurred. The future of Twitter appears highly uncertain. Users, and others in general, are increasingly asking themselves: What would they think if Twitter went away – or if the bird app didn’t even exist? – Inshort A new world without twitter.
It is estimated that Twitter has approximately 237 million daily visitors at the end of June which is still a large number compared to Facebook, which has nearly two billion users, TikTok, which has about a billion users and SnapChat, which has about 363 million.
As Twitter has come to be known throughout the world, it has become the benchmark communication channel for politicians, government officials, businesses, brands, celebrities, and news media outlets since it was founded 15 years ago.
There are those who believe the Twitterverse is little more than an artificial microcosm of the real world, with no actual importance beyond the superfluity of messages and hashtags. These people include New York entrepreneur Steve Cohn.
Problems with a world without Twitter
In his own Twitter account, Cohn claimed – from atop his own profile – that Twitter is “not essential in any way whatsoever”. There is absolutely no problem with the world without Twitter at all.”
According to him, not many people actually tweet, he continued. Almost all tweets generated on twitter come from (the) 1%. Most normal people never log onto the social networking site.”
While it may be indispensable to some, such as Karen North, a professor at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, it has also brought light to conversations that should have better known to a wider audience.
In most cases, people without prominence are not hear,” she said, explaining that this is the most frequent occurrence. It is only on Twitter, however, that “you have the opportunity to make an announcement.”
A senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington, Charles Lister, said that when there have conflicts, conflicts between groups or protests or crackdowns, Twitter has really become the platform where truths and the ground reality can be widely disseminate.
A world without twitter
Similarly to the rest of the social networks, Twitter is also use for spreading propaganda and misinformation, and the company has develop moderate tools to try and limit the sharing of the worst of the worst information.
Although Elon Musk’s takeover of Tesla has ignited controversy around the country, the ability of the company to keep up with all the demands of such an endeavor has put into question after more than two-thirds of those teams have left since Musk’s controversial move.
There has a study published in 2018 which concluded that false information circulates more quickly than posts that actually fact checke.
It’s unrealistic to expect a platform that will prevent misinformation and disinformation from spreading around the Internet and that we will be able to identify the fake news.” Lister cautioned.
However, Lister said it would be terrible if Twitter vanished because on the one hand, information would disappear, and on the other hand it would be bad if Twitter disappeared.
As Mark Hass, a professor at Arizona State University (ASU), put it, “Autocrats, people who don’t want information to be widely spread, or anyone who wants information kep private, would possibly benefit from Twitter being gone.”
Devastating effects on the world of journalism
It is fear that Twitter’s failure could have devastating effects on the world of journalism, according to experts.
According to North, Twitter really isn’t a social network, and really doesn’t even qualify to be call one. A network of news and information that enables people to stay up-to-date.”
Among the many sources where journalists get information, or ideas, or headlines, or sources, it’s where you go to get a heads up, or an idea for a story, or a source, or a quote.
Despite reduced workforce numbers and budget allocations in newsrooms, the amount of resources available is just not there, even for the world’s most well-funded news organizations.
The social media network Twitter is where she said she would be able to do the majority of this work.
From a media perspective, a potential collapse of Twitter would also have a knock-on effect. North asserted that without the platform, the rich and powerful stars of the world and politicians will still be able to command the media’s attention, while the less prominent ones will have to struggle to gain attention.
A story through the platform
In her explanation, she explained that Twitter has made it possible for anyone to announce a story through the platform.
This site serves as a way for people to share information in real time through the sharing of information.
The University of Maryland’s Caroline Orr tweeted on March 20: “Twitter has been one of the most important sources of information, networking, guidance, real-time updates, community mutual aid, and more, during hurricanes, wildfires, wars, outbreaks, terrorist attacks, mass shootings, and more in recent years,” she said.
This is not something that can be replace by a platform that already exists.” The statement make earlier.
However, the answer to the question of what an alternative to Twitter might look like at present does not appear obvious.
Lister told me that while Facebook is valuable, she thinks sometimes it has the appearance of being a bit old-fashioned.
World is moving to Mastodon
It is likely that smaller Twitter competitors will snatch some of Twitter’s users, including Mastodon, which has grown in popularity in the months since Elon Musk acquired Twitter as part of his funding round.
However, Hass said, “These will likely remain niche, and none of them will become the public square that Twitter strives to be,” according to the professor at ASU.
There was an attempt made by both North and He to suggest Reddit as a possible substitute for Twitter. However, North said the forum-based network has a fragmented and cluttered design which cannot mimic Twitter’s user-friendliness.
Do you think there is a good chance that a replacement will emerge? As for Lister’s response, he concluded with “Of course,” but noted such ingenuity takes a great deal of time and a great deal of resources. The process doesn’t happen every day. You need to take your time with it.”
