It’s a highly symbolic choice of Nobel Peace Prize laureates from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, three nations torn apart by the Ukrainian war.

Russian Memorial group, Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties, and detained activist Ales Bialiatski of Belarus were honored.

Berit Reiss-Andersen, head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, told reporters, “They have made a remarkable contribution to the documentary work on war crimes, human rights abuses, and abuses of power.

Bialiatski, 60, has been in jail since 2021, and the committee called for his release.

The news left Bialiatski’s wife “overwhelmed with emotion”.

Despite not directly addressing Putin, Reiss-Andersen stated that the committee wanted to call attention to the “suppression of human rights advocates and civil society by the Putin regime.”

Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov crowned champions of freedom of the press last year by the Peace Prize.

A gold medal, a diploma, and a prize sum of 10 million Swedish kronor (about $900,000) are included in the prize.

Nobel peace prize creator

Alfred Nobel, the prize’s creator, died on December 10, 1896, the anniversary of the awards’ creation.

Bialiatski expected to attend, Reiss-Andersen said.

The honor he has been bestowed upon him deserves to be given to him in Oslo, she said.

A large-scale demonstration against the regime in 2020 led to Bialiatski’s arrest after being imprisoned from 2011 to 2014.

It was said that despite extraordinary hardship. Mr Bialiatski hasn’t bowed to the pressure in his fight for democracy and human rights in Belarus.

Largest human rights organization

In the meantime, Memorial is the largest human rights organization in the country. In December 2021, the Supreme Court of Russia dissolved Memorial International, the group’s central structure.

The Memorial Institute also compiled and systematized information on political oppression and human rights violations during the Stalinist era.

Political prisoners in Russian prisons covered by it in an authoritative manner.

Also, the organization has been at the forefront of the fight against militarism and promoting human rights and a rule of law government.

Bialiatski and Memorial have both been discussed in previous Nobel speculations.

Russian war crimes against Ukrainian Civilians

Russian war crimes against Ukrainian civilians documented by the Center for Civil Liberties since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.

The center is collaborating with international partners to hold the guilty parties accountable, according to the committee. Oslo is home to only the Peace Prize, while Stockholm is home to the other Nobel awards.

Annie Ernaux, known for her deceptively simple novels that focus on gender and class, won the Nobel Literature Prize on Thursday. Since 1901, there have been 119 literature laureates, with 17 women receiving the honor.

Announcing the prizes for medicine, physics, and chemistry announced earlier in the week. Announcing the winner of the Nobel Economics Prize on Monday will conclude the 2022 Nobel season.
